The Garden

More like a boutique office in the park than a typical office building, you’ll find green gardens, mature trees and a greater biodiversity than most city locations.

Trees

Betula nigra ‘Heritage

Grows quickly into a medium-sized, graceful tree with drooping branches. The trunk is whitish-silverwhen young and retains this color when older. The bark is flaky. Young twigs are reddish-brown with dark lenticels. The leaf is shiny and deep green, turning yellow in autumn. Heritage’ flowers early.

Nyssa sylvatica

It is the autumn color that has made the tree so popular. In the autumn, the tree turns exceptionally beautiful in dark red, orange, and sometimes yellow hues. The color depends on the type of soil.

Alnus glutinosa ‘Laciniata’

A sometimes multi-stemmed, medium-height tree. Apart from its graceful leaves, the tree has a lovely growth habit with slightly drooping twigs.  In the autumn, it the leaves stay on the tree for a long time.

Betula albosinensis ‘Fascination’

The width of the tree is then about 6 m. The broad pyramidal crown consists of many thin, limp, overhanging twigs that are reddish-brown in color. The bark is a beautiful dark red color and flakes off at a young age. The leaf edge is double serrated. Fascination’ sprouts early in spring and in autumn the leaves turn golden yellow.

Quercus phellos

The leaves are narrow lanceolate to sometimes lineate and closely resemble those of the willow. On the upper side it is dark green, the underside is blue-green. In areas where the leaves fall off in winter, the autumn color is light yellow.

Shrubs grow their whole lives. The branches become thicker and the growing tips longer. Shrubs enrich the soil and provide food, a place to live and shelter for all kinds of animals.

Shrub layer

Nothofagus antarctica

The small, asymmetrical leaves are shiny and when they emerge, they spread a sweet, spicy fragrance. The autumn color is golden yellow. Nothofagus antarctica is a very characteristic tree.

Amelanchier lamarckii

The oval leaves are deep bronze-colored when opening and turn dark green later. The underside is grey-green, first hairy and later bare. In autumn the leaves turn a spectacular yellow and red. The flowers grow in loose, almost erect bunches and are bright white. The edible berries appear at the end of the summer, are blue-black and frosted. They taste sweet and are juicy.

ViburnumPragense

Flowers in April-May with striking, creamy white, umbel-shaped flowers, which in autumn can develop into inconspicuous red berries that later turn black.  Snowball has shiny green leaves (the underside light green) and is evergreen in mild winters.

The beautifully varied herbaceous layer around the building offers diversity. It’s creating a green and colorful flourishing whole and at the same time a provider of abundant food for insects.

Herb layer - Ground level

The herb layer of the green moat consists of various types of plants.

CAREX GRAYI

CAREX – ‘PHOENIX GRHOWARDIIEEN’

LUZULA NIVEA

RODGERSIA PINNATA – ‘IRISH BRONZE’

LAMIUM ORVALA

LIRIOPE MUSCARI – ‘MONEYMAKER’

GERANIUM CANTABRIGIENSE – ‘ST. OLA’

Herb layer - Parking level

The herb layer on the parking deck resembles the herb layer in the green canal and at ground level. Because the parking deck is not connected to the groundwater, the plants for the very wet conditions have been changed to species that are better suited to the conditions on the roof. In addition, there is more diversity in the various plants, resulting in more flowering and nutrition for insects.

FESTUCA GAUTIERI

GERANIUM CANTABRIGIENSE ‘BIOKOVO’

ASPLENIUM TRICHOMANES

SALVIA NEVADENSIS

RODGERSIA PINNATA ‘IRISH BRONZE’

ACANTHUS MOLLIS

“A villa in the leafy city of Amsterdam Zuid is only a villa if it has a garden that surrounds the building. This office villa has such a landscape setting, and not just any garden! It is a generous garden that provides the city, neighbourhood and building with grandeur, romance and sustainability. The building and the garden work together towards climate adaptive and nature inclusive goals and thus contribute to its environment. Together, they are ready for the future.”
