PI59’s new architectural appearance plays tribute to brutalism, to the original DNA of the building. The new façade bears the same tectonic strength as the former façade but in a more sublime tone. The concrete has a dual texture, sometimes rough and sometimes polished, like terrazzo. The sharp angles of the concrete creates a frame in which soft curves appear, materialized in bronze and glass. These impressive glass surfaces create an intriguing play with history: the building has transformed from a heavy concrete shell into a sensible structure.

For such a well-connected urban location, there is surprisingly little traffic, with pedestrians and bicycles being far more conspicuous than cars.
Office parking is partly hidden underground, with greenery and a basketball court above. At just 18 metres at its highest point, PI59 acts as a natural transition between high-rise Zuidas and its low-rise residential neighbours to the north. The Landscape Architects, Felixx, have been engaged to create a healing, green natural space for PI59 to nestle within. A place for people to socialise and relax.

The redevelopment will retain the majority of the existing structure and use low carbon construction materials. This will ensure that PI59 is way ahead of the 2030 goals of the Paris Agreement, regarding embodied carbon.
PI59’s energy system also ensures that when the building is delivered in 2023, it will almost meet the Paris Agreement’s operational carbon targets for 2050. And we will be working to exceed those targets well before the 2030 deadline.
BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment body for the construction industry. Following its renovation, PI59 is expected to gain a BREEAM Excellent Certificate, which puts it in the top 10% of over 2 million registered buildings.
WiredScore is the global digital connectivity rating system. WiredScore certification proves that a building is completely tech-ready. To ensure absolute transparency, and that PI59 has the connectivity that today’s businesses demand, a full certification process will be undertaken before completion.
